Project Summary | Objectives: to create a set of student- and tutor- training modules to help develop group process skills for effective and efficient small group learning, especially in Problem Based Learning (PBL) tutorials. Rationale: Students and faculty must learn unfamiliar, often difficult, process skills for effective PBL in the medical/dental program. Both are continually evaluated on these behaviors. Dysfunction in groups will happen and provides opportunity for essential skill development (e.g., ability to give and receive feedback; self-, group- and peer-evaluation; conflict resolution). Students and faculty have lots of experience and know-how in managing these situations on an individual basis but it is thinly distributed or 'held' by a small cadre of especially skilled faculty and students. It is most often passed along by personal consultation and has not been 'captured'. The challenge for training students and faculty in a consistent manner and managing problems effectively will increase as the program expands, doubling the class size, and is distributed to UVic and UNBC. |
