| Project Summary | TREK 2010 commits UBC to engaging 10% of students in Community Service-Learning (CSL) by 2010. CSL is an experiential learning approach that achieves academic goals by integrating community service with course work and encouraging critical reflection on the links between theory and practice. In order to reach this TREK target for CSL, several important developments need to occur: more faculty need to become informed about and committed to incorporating CSL into their courses; the roles that different campus units can play to support course-based CSL need to be developed; and administrative systems need to be created to track and assess students' engagement in CSL. This project will address these needs by building a decentralized network of commitment and support for CSL that is faculty-based. Through this project, three Faculties: Arts, Science, and the Sauder School of Business will develop and investigate the effectiveness of three different strategies to build faculty commitment to CSL. Arts will use faculty who have experience with CSL as champions to increase interest in CSL among other faculty members; Science will determine how to most effectively link science content with community issues and will pilot test a small number of projects; and the Sauder School of Business will determine how to link faculty research interests with community issues. The Learning Exchange, Teaching and Academic Growth, the Library, and the Campus Sustainability Office will help inform faculty about CSL and how to integrate it into their curricula and will help make connections to community issues and organizations. Student Services will develop ideas for systems to track the growth of CSL. |
