| Project Summary | Objectives: To create a customizable, first year, laboratory course where arts and science students can choose from a variety of hands-on and web-based laboratory activities based on personal interest, compatibility with their first year lecture course, and/or a quantitative or observational emphasis. Rationale: To actively involve students in their own learning and foster a sense of academic responsibility by giving them the power to determine their course of study. To showcase our most effective and popular laboratory exercises from EOSC 111, 112, 115, and 117 while continuing to provide students with a diverse set of exercises that highlight the wide-range of expertise within the EOS department and represent the interdisciplinary nature of earth sciences. Methods: The course will consist of an introductory lab and ten hand-on labs conducted by TAs during six scheduled lab periods and five web-based labs that are completed independently and according to the students’ schedules. Labs will cover topics related to oceanography, geology, paleontology, and atmospheric science and will be accessible online. A software program will be created that will allow students to select and change their lab exercises throughout the semester. |
