Project Summary | We propose to develop and evaluate a system that will enable medical students in the clinical years to track their learning experiences. Hand-held computers (personal digital assistants, PDAs) will be programmed to display learning objectives for two 8-week clerkships, Medicine and Surgery. Students will enter patient problems that they see and procedures that they perform into the PDA. The program will keep track of entries, indicating which objectives have been met and which ones remain to be completed. Periodically, students will submit their entries to a central server for review by the clerkship director. We anticipate that this system will help students to direct their own learning more effectively. It will also provide data on students' clinical encounters to clerkship directors, which can be used to evaluate and improve the educational program. |
