Project Summary

Teaching clinical skills to health professionals remains a challenging, expensive component of curricula. Although considered a fundamental part of clinical skills, research demonstrates that Canadian medical schools devote only 3% of musculoskeletal curriculum time to physical examination (Akesson 2003). UBC students of Medicine, Physiotherapy and Human Kinetics reported a desire for DVD and web-based resources to assist in their acquiring basic and advanced skills in musculoskeletal physical examination. Musculoskeletal problems contribute up to 40%of family doctor consultations and up to 100% of physiotherapists' workload. (UBC data were obtained during 2007 1 workshops -please see progress report). Therefore, through our successful Physical Exam of the Knee DVD (2007), we aim to extend the musculoskeletal curriculum by: 1) Creating a multidisciplinary teaching DVD of the physical examination of the Shoulder, Neck, Back and Him, and 2) Responding to student feedback we received to make this tool web-based.
