Project Summary

The project is the construction and piloting of a mixed mode (face-to-face, digital) teacher education course addressing issues, policies, and promising practices in teaching K-12 students in rural settings, including those with Aboriginal populations. It will prepare teacher education students to use research, technologies, and media to bring together what is called "place-based teaching" with curriculum for global citizenship. The project responds to recommendations of BC's Task Force on Rural Education (2003) and School Trustees' Association (2007) that universities extend greater efforts toward meeting needs of rural students, including rural Aboriginal students, through teacher preparation. The project also responds to broader societal demands for global education articulated in TREK 2010.The course will be developed with partners from UBC's Education Faculty, Selkirk College, BC Rural and Small Schools Teachers' Association, and several others. I will pilot the course in UBC's West Kootenay Teacher Education Program, the rural program which I oversee.
