Project Summary

The objective of this project is to interview and hold focus groups with current UBC students and UBC alumni who have attended classes with significant Aboriginal content to assess the level of discussion of Aboriginal issues in classrooms at UBC. It is a stage in a larger project currently underway that makes visible reports of problematic classroom discussions of Aboriginal subject matter, which results in alienating classroom environments and negative educational experiences. Videotaped interviews from students reflecting on their experiences of these situations have been used to develop teaching and learning resources to encourage a more professional approach to working with difficult cross-cultural and politically divisive issues. Updated interviews and focus groups will contribute to creating a stable platform of materials that can be used to provide an ongoing assessment of the level of discussion of Aboriginal subject matter in classrooms at UBC, and assist to evaluate UBC's progress in addressing classroom climate issues as they relate to UBC's Trek 2010 goals.
