Project Summary | Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a high-risk, often life-saving procedure performed by physicians from wide-ranging backgrounds. However, skill acquisition by trainees for ETI is hampered by limited exposure during medical school and residency. Furthermore, there is currently no validated checklist describing the essential steps required for successful ETI. Given the educational success of other algorithmic approaches such as ACLS and ATLS, this checklist has the opportunity to improve and standardize the pedagogical techniques currently employed for teaching ETI. Using a modified Delphi technique with repeated rounds of interviews of 15 anesthesiologists, we will develop a validated ETI checklist. Reliability of the checklist will be assessed using a high-fidelity patient simulator (see methods). Based on this checklist, an educational module for ETI consisting of high-fidelity patient simulation and an online-video module will be developed. This will be used for ongoing medical student and resident education, and future patient safety research in ETI. |
