Project Summary

In October 2010, a team of faculty and students from the CENES department launched a long-awaited project: the North American premiere of an early-feminist German play by Hedwig Dohm, slated for April 2011. The extensive interest this event generated among our students has highlighted a demand for a media-based pedagogical module incorporating performance and technology in and beyond the classroom.

For September 2011, we envision an interdisciplinary project with a clear thematic focus: adapting for the stage the 16th-century anonymous Historia von D. Johann Fausten, the chapbook which inspired works by Marlowe, Goethe, Mann and Schnittke, among others. Our work includes original research channeled through a series of courses, workshops and guest lectures, culminating in the performance of our adaptation of the chapbook and a multimedia exhibition for the UBC community. We request financial support for production and exhibition costs, a graduate research assistant and an undergraduate project assistant.
