Project Summary

This project will create visual resources (i.e. short video productions and 3D imagery) of animal specimens used in FRST 395 (Wildlife Ecology) to help students learn taxonomy of vertebrates (e.g. birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians). We will build visual resources to serve two purposes: (1) increased accessibility of lab specimens to students studying vertebrate taxonomy, and (2) preservation of specimens in the teaching collections, which are costly and difficult to maintain. Students will be able to interact with specimens they would not normally be allowed to handle (e.g. endangered or rare specimens), as well as see a greater diversity of examples than are normally possible in the laboratories for the course. Our intent is to make these resources freely available online and to other courses at UBC (e.g. BIOL 204, BIOL 426, BIOL 427) which also include the study of taxonomy and anatomy.
