Project Summary | Building on the experiential learning strength of the Faculty of Forestry Research Forests and UBC Farm, this project targets field-skill development across four courses through two main activities: 1) in collaboration with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, create calibrated soil texture “kits” featuring distinct soils from the interior and coastal Research Forests and UBC Farm for use across four courses; and 2) enhance field-skill development opportunities for Interior Field School (FRST 351) students at the Alex Fraser Research Forest (AFRF). The soil texture kits will increase exposure of 400 + students annually to a range of BC soils, enhancing student opportunities to practice and refine the skills of soil interpretation and hand texturing. At AFRF, we will establish re-usable soil pits for individual practice; a replacement soil pit for group learning; purpose-designed maps plus orienteering courses for practicing compass use, distance and slope-distance estimation, and topographic interpretation. |
