Project Summary

This 2-year project is designed to enhance clinical teaching and learning for faculty and students in Term 4 of the 5-term accelerated Nursing Undergrad-Curriculum, in which students learn practice competencies in Primary Health Care (NURS 362), Mental Health (NURS 363) and Skills (NURS 401). At issue is the challenge to provide adequate clinical learning for students within complex community and mental health settings and with high clinical teacher turnover. To address these issues we propose three interventions in these clinical courses in 2019W1: 1) Introduce an integrated learning model using the Hub & Spokes approach in which students are able to meet both sets of competencies in an integrated fashion, 2) Enhance pedagogical support and guiding materials for clinical teachers, and 3) Incorporate a Graduate Practicum (NURS 577) option for two or three graduate students into Term 4 of the undergraduate program to foster scholarly development and clinical education leadership.
