| Project Summary | This project will launch the first indigenous reporting course in Canada under the direction of Duncan McCue, CBC-TV reporter. The project is a unique opportunity for the UBC Graduate School of Journalism students to report in First Nations’ communities in the Lower Mainland. Graduate students will learn about local First Nations cultures and history; examine historic and contemporary media portrayals of indigenous peoples in BC; and discuss strategies for in-depth coverage of indigenous issues. Guest speakers will provide insights into the relationship between media and aboriginal peoples. After this preparation, student teams will be assigned to cover a subject, each travelling to and immersing themselves in a different First Nations’ community in the Lower Mainland. They will be expected to produce a feature-length print piece and audio-visual slideshow or video, designed to be published on online news websites. |
