Project Summary | This proposal is for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a mentoring program involving community-dwelling people with chronic aphasia who are participating in the education of speech-language pathology (SLP) students over the course of their two-year program. In a weekly group program, participants with aphasia serve as mentors for students about what it means to live with aphasia; students and participants with aphasia also work together to explore and evaluate strategies for supporting communication in aphasia. Feasibility of this project, now in its first year, was initially demonstrated in a time-limited research pilot project. This TLEF project is building on pilot project findings, and is now integrating group activities into SLP coursework (including classroom-based courses and clinical practica), through alignment of specific goals and objectives within the SLP curriculum that will guide the nature of student participation within the group. |
