Project Summary

As the profession of pharmacy expands its scope of practice to enhance patient-centred care, there is a need to further the experiential aspects of pharmacy curricula that support the development of clinical reasoning and effective patient relationship skills. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FoPS) is developing "The Pharmacists Clinic (PC)”, an innovative, non-dispensing, faculty based licensed pharmacy clinic that will model best practices in applying the skills and expert knowledge of pharmacists as collaborative patient-care providers. Located in the new FoPS building, the PC will allow pharmacists and pharmacy students to conduct drug therapy assessments, educate patients regarding the risks and benefits of drug therapy, and identify and resolve any medication related issues. In addition to benefiting patients, the PC will serve as an experiential learning environment for students (undergraduate and graduate) and practicing pharmacists. Interprofessional collaboration with other healthcare practitioners such as physicians and nurses will also be an integral part of the clinic. This proposal requests funds for phase 1 of development the PC: (1) to support student involvement in the development of the clinic and (2) to create and pilot a well developed learning program for students to develop their skills through participation in clinic actvities.
