Project Summary

The Department of Mathematics at UBC currently serves over 20,000 undergraduate students annually. Providing a personalized learning experience for students at this scale is a challenge. We propose to extend existing UBC learning technologies, Alchemy and MindWare, to develop a personalized, adaptive learning technology for our undergraduate mathematics courses using existing course material developed by UBC mathematics instructors.

The project (code-named Orchard) is an adaptive recommendation system which selects exercises and provides personalized feedback to encourage student study habits. The system recommends problems from a database of questions (authored by UBC instructors) based on: subject, standard or non-standard, conceptual or procedural, new or review. The web application includes a dashboard which records total study time, distribution of study time, and the balance of different types of problems. The goal is to expose students to a robust mix of problems and actively engage students in their learning processes.
