Project Summary | This project aims to create a suite of digital learning objects that will facilitate student learning of topics outside of class, together with in-class active learning resources so that students and instructors can focus on the application of content knowledge for two courses, Structural Chemistry, with Application to Chemistry of the Elements (CHEM 121) and Physical and Organic Chemistry (CHEM 123). To support student learning outside of class time, the instructors will create content modules for each of the major topics in the first-year curriculum. These modules could include multiple short video lectures and demonstrations, with narrated PowerPoint slides and worked examples along with pre-lecture questions. The instructors will also create and implement an electronic homework evaluation system to provide students with timely and specific feedback. In-class activity resources will include advanced clicker questions and workbook-style activities. CHEM 121 is a required course for students in many programs in the Faculties of Science, Applied Science, Forestry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Land and Food Systems. Approximately 75 percent of CHEM 121 students continue on to CHEM 123. It’s hoped that the implementation of this project will create a fulfilling educational experience for the substantial number of students who take CHEM 121 and 123 and increase students’ long-term understanding of chemistry. |
