Year 1: Summary

The Land, Food, and Community Core Series courses in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems are engaging in experiential pedagogies by integrating community-based experiential learning (CBEL), community-based action research (CBAR), and flexible learning strategies. This project will further enhance student learning, including application of theoretical knowledge in hands-on activities. To meet the objectives below, the project team will integrate experience of previous FL initiatives in the Faculty (inclusive of faculty, students and community partner stakeholders), blend current FL strategies from online to face-to-face versions of courses, and create online resources repositories for the Core Series.

Year 2: Summary

The Land, Food and Community (LFC) Core Series courses in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems are engaging in experiential pedagogies by integrating community-based experiential learning (CBEL), community-based action research (CBAR) initiatives and flexible learning (FL) strategies. We wish to further enhance student learning, including application of theoretical knowledge in hands-on activities. Our proposal has two objectives: to further incorporate FL strategies into the Core Series to enhance CBEL/CBAR initiatives, and to develop FL strategies to increase meaningful learning opportunities in the Core Series’ lecture sessions. To meet these objectives, we will integrate experiences of previous FL initiatives in the Faculty, blend current FL strategies from online to face-to-face versions of courses, and create online repositories of resources for the Core Series. We will evaluate these initiatives by soliciting feedback from students, instructors and stakeholders, and test for achievement of Learning Outcomes across the progression of the Core Series.

Year 3: Summary

The Land, Food and Community (LFC) core series courses in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems are engaging in experiential pedagogies by integrating community-based experiential learning (CBEL), community-based action research (CBAR) initiatives, and flexible learning (FL) strategies. After two years’ implementation of the TLEF project, we wish to review and reflect upon previous experiences and create a framework for sustained impact on student learning in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and wider student populations. Our proposal has two main objectives: to analyze and synthesize the first two years’ project outcomes at theoretical and practical levels and to develop and disseminate a framework that further incorporates FL strategies into the LFC series to enhance CBEL/CBAR and meaningful learning opportunities. We will present project outcomes and findings in academic articles, book chapters, conference presentations, and communication to students, instructors, and stakeholders.
