Project Summary

Historically, lab manuals have taken a one-size-fits-all approach. This misses opportunities: 1) to provide increased content depth for ambitious/gifted students, and 2) to support struggling students with refresher content. We will migrate lab manual content for analytical chemistry experiments in our 3rd year labs (“CHEM3XX”) onto the Alchemy platform, and add content (enrichment and refresher) and self-quizzes.  On the Alchemy platform, developed internally at UBCV Chemistry Department, students choose the route(s) they take through the content, similar to a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book. Students thus self-customize their active learning experience, tailoring it to their academic background and interests.

This project leverages the success of the existing Alchemy platform and a pilot of the Alchemy Lab Manual (ALM) concept. Guided by existing survey data, we will expand the ALM. We will assess the project via surveys of students and TAs and via think-aloud interviews. We will disseminate our findings at UBC and beyond.
