Project Summary

Learning-by-teaching represents a powerful, though underutilized, method for mastering a subject. In pilot undergraduate courses (PSYC 278, BIOC 202, and BIOC 302), we have implemented a study buddy program where we pair high-achieving students with lower-achieving students as tutors and protégés. To date, we have offered study buddy matching to over 1,700 students. Our study showed that participants reaped significant benefit: their average increased by 1.5% compared to students who did not participate, and in some classes they increased by up to 5.5%. Despite these positive results, not all students in these pilot courses opt into the program, possibly due to personal or situational barriers. In this project, we will build a Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) biochemistry study buddy tool that acts as both a tutor and protégé to remove barriers and encourage more students to engage in the highly effective strategy of learning-by-teaching.
