| Project Summary | Concurrent with the Aboriginal Languages and Literacy Institute (ALLI) to be held at UBC in July 2006, the Linguistics Department will offer a Linguistics 100 course, with curriculum content specifically drawn from the extraordinary diversity and complexity of the structures of the First Nations languages of Canada, most particularly from the critically endangered linguistic heritage of BC's native peoples. One of the principal goals of ALLI is to provide directly relevant curriculum, human resources (native speakers of these oral traditions), and technological resources (web-based interactive learning systems with sound files), so that First Nations peoples themselves have the opportunity to acquire the conceptual knowledge bases and methodological tools that are necessary for them to engage in the primary documentation of, research on, and revitalization efforts for these languages. TLEF funds would support research and development of a curriculum, in collaboration with FN students and Elders, that is both broadly representative (32 languages in BC alone) and culturally sensitive and respectful. |
