Project Summary

We will re-evaluate and renew the MINE Engineering undergraduate program.

As a starting point, we will determine a new, updated definition of what it is to be a “UBC Mining Engineer”.

We will use extensive stakeholder consultation to better understand the intersection of our accreditation requirements, societal needs, and the important role future mining engineers will play in creating a more sustainable world. We will develop a new program vision, program level learning outcomes, and then at a course level create clear, well defined, and measurable learning outcomes that align with the overall program level outcomes and goals.

Changes in the professional and academic world have created new challenges. For example, the use of highly networked sensors in mining operations and the need to analyze the resulting large amounts of data has created the need for mining engineers to learn different skills . Also, standard didactic classroom delivery is no longer viewed as sufficient. Incorporating best practices and new options such as experiential, interactive, and online components to improve student learning is increasingly important to help our graduates gain the necessary competencies to be ready to contribute to an increasingly complex world.

Our goal is to provide students with as many key and varied opportunities as possible to become a well-rounded engineer who has the tools and training to create innovative and sustainable changes in the mining industry.

We want to be recognized as the world leader in MINE engineering education by providing an engaging and flexible learning environment for students which fosters innovation, and the value of service to society, and inclusivity.
