Project Summary

UBC's pivot to online instruction seeded innovation in the policy, content, and delivery of assessments. It also laid bare the challenge of assuring the integrity of the process both in terms of fairness and feedback. We articulate a vision for centralized support for evaluation of student learning via models for the use of “in-situ” and “pop-up” facilities for assessment delivery (tl;dr models for large-scale testing). The goals of the models are to:

  • Increase student agency and equity in assessment processes.
  • Allow hybrid assessment types to improve value for students.
  • Streamline exam logistics for course instructors.
  • Facilitate broad research into the effects of teaching innovations.

Our plan is to build documentation, test logistics, and explore a menu of policies, as we carefully and incrementally grow capacity. A bonus result will be a vibrant community of practice around the development and deployment of meaningful, large-scale, assessments.
