Project Summary

As society broadens its understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE), its healthcare institutions must also reflect this growth. Today’s healthcare professionals must develop knowledge of gender diversity and its intersection with sexual orientation and associated experiences, histories, and language to ensure best possible care. To build queer competencies amongst pharmacy students, this project will integrate SOGIE into the curriculum throughout the four professional years. Our goal is to enable students to provide equitable care for queer folx. This project will:

  1. Scaffold SOGIE content in mandatory PHRM 100 and PHRM 270 courses.
  2. Develop a third-year elective course, taking a human-centric approach that focuses on affirmative care.
  3. Build capacity with community partners through development of PHRM 473 community-engaged learning practicums.
  4. Establish a queer advisory committee, inviting 2SLGBTQQIA+ representations from the community, Faculty, and profession to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of (1)-(3).
