|Title||AMS Tutoring Services|

Although many students enjoy intramurals and clubs, ultimately they come to UBC for the academics. As in all things, some people do better than others in this endeavor. AMS Tutoring exists specifically to offer high quality peer tutoring for students who need support in reaching their academic goals. To ease the transition between high-school and university, we offer free drop-in tutoring for 100 level courses in Math, Chemistry, Physics, and all levels of English. To accommodate second year students we offer Appointment Tutoring in all of the above subjects at 100 and 200 levels as well as 100 and 200 level French, Economics, and Biology. In addition to providing excellent academic support for the student body, this service also provides an arena for students to build their work experience and professional skills through being employed as an AMS Tutor. All of our tutors undergo extensive training with the Disability Resource Centre, AMS Tutoring, UBC Equity Ambassadors (student leaders), and several UBC faculty and staff members. This training provides them with numerous transferable skills to serve as assets to them in applying their UBC degrees towards their future career paths. Many of our tutors are interested in teaching as a profession; for these students, this work experience is invaluable.
Thanks to the TLEF's grant last year, AMS Tutoring was able to increase our number of tutors on staff (from 80 employable hours to 138 hours). This increase enormously improved the quality of service - a statement proven by our student feedback surveys (a collected total of 75 completed surveys): 20% more students than last year strongly or very strongly agree that AMS Tutoring has helped them better understand their courses. We hope to acquire this funding again to maintain our level of service.
