Project Summary | Central to all that students do in university is their academics. Recognizing that the transition from high school to university can be difficulty, AMS Tutoring Services’ objective is to deliver excellent academic support to First year students through peer mentorship. First Year students deserve and require strong support to be successful. And based on the models of learning, mentorship from an experienced peer is important. One student comments on a survey, “I have benefited so much from the [AMS] tutors…free tutoring is a lifesaver.” The program, while it has already seen a great deal of success (see enclosed progress report), has the potential to help students more effectively. Increasing the number of tutors hired, and the hours available will be useful to students. However, more important are better training and support of peer tutors. Training will help the tutors teach more effectively. And with more formalized coordination with other tutoring programs on campus, and the various departments, our program will be able to help students with their material more effectively. As well, there is the potential for these tutors to serve as mentors for the First Year students, and for the program to continue its coordination with the University’s services through the First Year Coordinator. |
