Project Summary

Objectives:

  • To provide training in leadership skills focusing on multiple intelligences, including personal and social competencies, e.g. how to work effectively together across boundaries (gender, racial, cultural, religious), conflict resolution, optimism and personal agency.
  • To provide training beyond traditional threshold competencies to enable students to achieve personal fulfillment and the ability to become responsible citizens.
  • To provide a conceptual framework for lifelong learning.
  • To extend the Leadership Workshops to interested intact groups, e.g. Dean of Science Ambassadors, student volunteers working in the Downtown Eastside Initiative (some of the material has already been adapted to meet their specific needs).

Rationale: A growing body of literature suggests that knowledge and cognitive competencies are necessary but not sufficient ingredients for success. Social and emotional competencies provide the distinguishing bases for successful leaders and significant contributors to society. Skills beyond threshold competencies (intellectual, knowledge-based) should be the subject of planned learning.
