Project Summary

In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and UBC’s Strategic Plan, health programs are striving to meet our responsibilities to increase Indigenous health learning opportunities.

UPROOT seeks to strengthen, scaffold, and expand Indigenous content by creating two courses:

  1. a mandatory pharmacy course on Indigenous health and wellness;
  2. an elective course using a blended-model of Indigenous community-based learning and classroom teaching.

Students will use a strengths-based approach to collaborate with partners in the development of community-based pharmacy projects. The curriculum will be overseen by an advisory committee, comprised of Indigenous team members and partners, students, and non-Indigenous allies. The meaningful participation of our partners will ensure the approach, development, and evaluation of the project respects Indigenous knowledge, values, and practices. The community-based projects will serve as an opportunity for ongoing reciprocity and lasting partnerships.
