Year 1: Summary

The project is to enhance the development of the Environmental Sciences Honours Program in the Faculty of Science.

The rational is that Environmental Sciences is a vibrant program that is undergoing changes due to interruption in the parallel program in the Faculty of Arts. The program is critical to maintain as it provides core courses component for the undergraduate program for the ‘College of Sustainability’ that is proposed to coordinate environmental education at UBC.

The current proposal supports bridging funds for ENVR 200 and 400 and requests new support for ENVR 300.

(Note: this project received $7,130 in supplemental funding in 2001/2002 to support "Environmental Studies 300")

Year 3: Summary

The project is to enhance the development of the Environmental Sciences Honours and Major Program in the Faculty of Science. ENSC received a TLEF in 2002/03 to support teaching on the Program.

The rationale is that Environmental Sciences is a vibrant interdisciplinary program in the Faculty of Science, as evidenced by the recent addition of a Major degree option. It continues to be one of the largest Honours programs in the Faculty. Funding for the program has been uncertain since the interruption in the parallel program in the Faculty of Arts. The program has been supported by contributions from the Office of the Dean of Science and TLEF funds up to now. The funds within the Faculty of Science are under heavy demands.

The program exemplifies the learning objectives of Trek 2000 and the Academic Plan, and provides an exciting and unusual opportunity for undergraduates. The program is critical to maintain as it provides the core course component for the undergraduate program for the 'Inter-Faculty Program in Sustainability Studies' that is proposed to coordinate environmental education at UBC. The current proposal seeks bridging funds for ENVR 200, 300 and 449 (formerly 400) to allow the program to continue for another year.
