Year 1: Summary

Objectives:

  1. Engage students in the innovative use of information technology to create learning materials.
  2. Enhance students' learning about the linguistic and cultural aspects of languages spoken by recent immigrants to Canada through the creation of a web site for use by students in teacher education, healthcare professions, library and information studies, and commerce; as well as UBC faculty who teach recent immigrants or international students, and teachers practicing in multi-lingual and multi-cultural BC schools.

Rationale:

The Ministry of Education recommends that information and communication technology skills be part of teacher training and that teachers have greater opportunities to collaboratively plan and work with teacher-librarians. This project will engage student teachers and librarians in the practice of working with information technologies to present the results of research in a shared resource. The web resource will consolidate difficult-to-find information and materials on language structures and intercultural communication with particular groups, and add a BC/Canadian perspective to the existing body of research available.

Year 3: Summary

Objectives:

  1. Engage students in the innovative use of information technology to create their own learning materials.
  2. Enhance students’ learning about linguistic and cultural aspects of international languages through the creation of a website for students in teacher education, healthcare professions, library and information studies, UBC educators who teach immigrants and international students, and teachers working in BC’s multilingual and multicultural schools.

Rationale:

The Faculty of Education’s Technology Plan mandates the integration of ICT skills into all aspects of teacher education at UBC. This project uses student-centred learning to engage students, instructors and librarians collaboratively with ICT, and present student research in the form of an original resource freely available on a long term basis to educators at UBC and beyond.
