Project Summary

By matching funding from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), we have been assessing the feasibility of using complementary long distance education strategies, i.e., on-line Internet video tutorials with Web-based tutorials in conjunction with internationally-respected content experts in critical care, to enable undergraduate physical therapy students, to master advanced topics related to intensive care. Specifically, we have been:

  1. Developing two tutorial learning modules including video linked sessions and WebCT modules in two critical care subspecialties with one expert at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Poly U) and the other at UBC for the final year physical therapy students at the two institutions.
  2. Conducted a video-linked session at the beginning, and two such sessions at the end of one month during which time PolyU and UBC students will work through the two WebCT learning modules.
  3. Evaluated (ongoing) the learning experience of the students, and teaching experience of the two content experts.

Consistent with the mission statements of PolyU and UBC to develop East-West partnerships, this project links students, faculty and institutions internationally in an innovative learning initiative. Both institutions have well developed telestudios to support the venture. Web-based teaching has become a priority to both departments.
