Theatre and Film Production Curriculum Development at the Great Northern Way Campus

TitleTheatre and Film Production Curriculum Development at the Great Northern Way Campus
Duration1 Year
Project Summary

This proposal is to implement four (of six) courses in Creative Arts technology at the Great Northern Way Campus (two in design for vacuform and two in digital post production) and offering in September of 2004. Funding is requested to complete the setup of donated and purchased equipment essential to the instruction, for instructors in two of the courses (THTR 408A and B – Vacuform), for contract administrative staff, and for Teaching Assistants for one year.

The Great Northern Way Campus facility provides this Department a unique opportunity for instruction in the design and use of vacuform technology, using an industrial size machine donated by CBC. This technology is used extensively in film, theatre, artwork, and commercial design, but training has hitherto been relatively inaccessible due to the size and expense of the required equipment. Thanks to the CBC donation UBC is not the only institution in B.C. able to offer substantial training in this area, and we propose to develop classes to include BCIT, SFU, and EDIAD students through their industrial design, film, and theatre curricula, as well as industry professionals seeking to expand their expertise.

Two digital film edit suites are presently being installed at the site, and we are currently starting to set up a Foley/ADR room, which will be one of the few in Vancouver accessible to independent filmmakers and students (again, we propose extend availability to site partners and professionals). This Foley/ADR suite is key to the overall plan in film teaching, as we will again be to the only institution offering access for students' training and use.

Finally, we will be using the administration of these two programmes and the production shops at the GNW campus to develop apprenticeship and partnership models for linking senior students to professional producers in Film and Theatre, and we will be exploring fee-based "Continuing Studies" cost recovery from non-UBC students.
