Project Summary

Objective: To create reading and recreational curriculum specific to Aboriginal history and culture, to be used in the already existing Bridge through Sport Reading Club, and to compile a best practice to be distributed to First Nations communities and post-secondary institutions.

Methods: A NITEP, HKin, and Varsity athlete will be hired as co-facilitators for the Reading Club. Each student will take on a project, which will include the development of reading, writing and recreational curriculum that draws on Aboriginal history and culture, and the recruitment of varsity athletes to act as role models and guest presenters in the Reading Club.

Rationale: Musqueam community members have observed a tendency among their youth to 'drop-out of school mentally' in the early elementary years attributed to a lack of connection with the curriculum being taught, low self-esteem and other complicated factors. Curriculum that is meaningful and interesting to the lives of Aboriginal youth is in demand.
