Project Summary

This aim of this initiative is to create a Hands-on Interactive Learning Lab for courses EECE 456 (Computer Communications). EECE 412 (Introduction to Computer Security). EECE 565 (Data Communications), and EECE 520 (Advanced Topics in Computer Networking).

Objectives: To allow students to gain a deeper understanding of computer networks and Internet via hands-on experience in a testbed. To provide a safe environment for students to learn how new or upgraded network systems can be designed, configured, measured, and tested.

Rationale: The learn-by-doing approach is crucial in teaching computer networking courses. Although the current computer networking courses include assignments of network simulations and each student can finish the assignment with the aid of his or her own personal computer (PC), other assignments which required multiple PCs and the re-configuration of other network elements (e.g., Web server configuration, network routing) are not possible without having a special, dedicated computer network facility.

Methods: The special and dedicated lab facility will include multiple PCs interconnected by switches and routers to form a network. It will allow students to perform experiments including interconnecting hardware, configuring network systems, measuring performance, observing protocols in action, and creating client-server programs that communicate over a network.
