Project Summary

The Graduate Student Certificate Program (GCP) on Teaching in Higher Education provides formalized and comprehensive teacher training for graduate students at UBC. This 150-hour certificate takes a learning-centred approach to teaching; participants explore learning theory and innovations in higher education, and continue to develop a teaching toolbox.

The Certificate Program creates a teaching community where instructors are committed to excellence and scholarship in teaching. It prepares UBC graduate students for the significant task that lies ahead - communicating knowledge and inspiring students in effective and respectful ways.

In addition to covering topics that are of particular relevance for instructors in higher education, each component of the program allows participants to practice instructional skills; by the end of the program, participants' have had the opportunity to practice their written and verbal communication skills for various audiences. Participants produce a final project that is a portfolio demonstrating content aptitude and critical reflection. This serves as the basis for a teaching portfolio.
