Project Summary

A partnership between the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre for a Digital Media Internship for students in the MLIS program which will focus on social networking and digital media topics. Funding for the one-year project will be used to hire a student team, who will work under the supervision of SLAIS faculty and the Learning Centre Project Coordinator, to design the internship program and develop and present a prototype workshop series, creating a model to be used in subsequent years.

The Digital Media Internship will be integrated into the SLAIS curriculum as a three-credit course to be offered annually. Participating students will be responsible for developing and presenting a series of workshops for undergraduates that would be delivered through the Chapman Learning Commons.

The workshop series will cover current topics related to social networking and digital media, especially as they relate to enhancing student success. Sample topics could include the use of social networking sites to create online learning communities, academic tagging, digital identities and evaluating web-based resources for research. Many of the workshops will be delivered as hands-on sessions whenever possible, through the Chapman Learning Commons, a hub for academic and learning support.
