Project Summary

Entering its third full year in September 2008, the Co-ordinated Arts Program (CAP) has continued to attract strong students, and in growing numbers. For the next academic year we propose offering a new stream, which we believe, based on our discussions with current undergraduates and feedback from high school students, will attract even more students to CAP. This new stream, New Media and Society, would integrate courses in English, Journalism, Sociology, along with the standard Arts Studies 100 (a key CAP seminar in writing and scholarship). The intent would be to provide a first year introduction to the development of new media technologies, their applications, and their cultural, political, and social impacts. We understand new media principally in the context of the web, the internet, and mobile digital technologies. The social organization and communication features of our media-saturated world is being altered by these new technologies, including how we work, communicate and enrich ourselves. Exploring these issues through four interrelated courses will provide students with an introduction to the Arts that integrates the humanities and social sciences, offers a focal point on policy and practice (via Journalism and new media), and addresses a topic that engages the interest of many young people.
