Project Summary

Quality and safety (Q&S) issues are intrinsic to nursing care and to nursing leadership. UBC nursing faculty for the undergraduate leadership course have partnered with nurse leaders from the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) to create a Q&S leadership option for undergraduate and nursing students. This Q&S option is in its second phase of piloting. The initial pilot project was the recent recipient of the national Ted Freedman Innovation in Education Award (2007). This option combines didactic instruction with experiential learning. Q&S option students participate as members of interdisciplinary Q&S teams within PHSA healthcare settings. This option provides students with an opportunity to examine, first hand, how leadership significantly determines safe and effective patient care delivery.

TLEF funds are being sought to critically evaluate this option; to create a course template with teaching and learning resources; and to expand nursing leadership education opportunities to include a broader variety of healthcare settings for all our students.
