Project Summary

Building upon Soil Science research carried out at the University of British Columbia (UBC), the proposed project will create a set of seven laboratory modules to enhance teaching and learning in five UBC courses (four on-campus and one online course). Laboratory exercises are an indispensable component of the teaching of soil science; however, in many circumstances "hands-on" laboratory instruction is not possible creating the need for innovative alternatives. Each module will include two to four soil science laboratory exercises focusing on a specific topic (e.g., carbon sequestration and energy flow, plant nutrients, soil quality, water flow, organic matter decomposers, soil compaction, and soil contaminants). Each module will be designed by a faculty member who is conducting research in that particular area and will include written descriptions, photos and video footage of the execution of a specific field or laboratory experiment , background information with relevant articles, and a sample data set.
