Year 1: Summary

UBC student volunteers will run a science and math club on the Musqueam reserve. The club will take place one day per week after school hours, and will be open to Musqueam youth in grades 4-7. The initiative will build foundational skills in science and math, and will be modeled after the already popular Reading Club in Musqueam. The Club will involve UBC mentors leading an hour of fun science and math activities, followed by snacks, recreation and door prizes. Some activities will also take place in the science labs on campus.

Year 2: Summary

A UBC Student Coordinator works with UBC Student volunteers and Musqueam youth outreach workers to run a science and math club on the Musqueam Reserve. The after-school club takes place on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30, and is now open to Musqueam youth age 7 to 12. The initiative uses fun, dynamic, hands-on activities in math and science to build upon and improve foundational skills.

Currently, in its second year the program has continued to flourish and grow. In the first hour the youth enjoy a healthy snack, engage in activities that have included, take home terrariums, take home herb gardens, math mania, and bridge building, In the second hour we move to the Musqueam community gym and spend 45 to 50 min playing games.
