Year 1: Summary

WordPress provides the best platform for engaging students in deep reflection on their learning while meeting the Faculty’s commitment to document our assessment of the students’ attainment of teaching standards. The UBC Office of Learning Technology has also just begun to experiment with WordPress for similar use across campus and for implementation on UBC IT servers. In this project we propose to:

  • Establish the structures necessary for WordPress to become the mandatory platform in the Teacher Education Program for communication, reflection and e-portfolio development.
  • Enable a rich, peer support framework for students through development of WordPress.
  • Enable the Faculty to construct an iterative curriculum redesign process informed by student artifacts and reflections.
    Work with the Office of Learning Technology to create workshops and processes for adaption of WordPress by other Faculties for their curriculum and learning goals.
  • Funds will be used to hire teacher education and graduate students to assist with these activities.

Year 2: Summary

We intend to build on our successful implementation of WordPressMU (WPMU) as the platform to support teacher candidates' (TCs) e-portfolio projects and to store graduating teachers' e-portfolios as academic records. The Office of Learning Technology (OLT), the Teacher Education Office (TEO) and the Computer and Media Services (CMS) with to continue to refine WPMU and its various applications within the teacher education program as well as throughout and beyond the faculty. We will:

  1. sustain and enhance the use of e-portfolios as learning, assessment and self-promotional tools;
  2. build on social networking (Web 2.0) capacity of WPMU to further develop its instructional uses;
  3. demonstrate the success of this program to other Faculties and support them in developing their own e-portfolio and social networking projects, using WPMU;
  4. enlist the support of 60+ teacher candidates to work in instructive roles as e-coaches to introduce WPMU to other TCs and other interested Faculties;
  5. continue to develop self-learning resources for student/faculty use of WPMU.

Year 3: Summary

The Faculty of Education’s CREATE committee is revising the teacher education program for implementation starting September 2011. This proposal’s project affiliates (TEO, CMS and the FoE CREATE committee) plan to enable the integration of the current e-portfolio assignment with the revised curriculum. The affiliates intend to further customize WordPressMU (WPMU), the platform modified to support teacher candidates’ (TCs) e-portfolio projects and store them as academic records;

  • reinforce and refine the concept and application of e-portfolios as learning, assessment and self-promotional tools for TCs and Faculty;
  • sustain and institutionalize the position of Co-op student WPMU technician;
  • employ TCs as e-coaches for the concluding year of the present program to augment developing resources, conduct research, and ease/enable program transition;
  • continue to develop self-learning resources for student/faculty use of WPMU; and
  • continue to collaborate with the campus e-portfolio Community of Practice.
