Year 1: Summary

The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS) is entering a new era of academic programming. In light of an imminent decision that will clarify the site's future, this project will be launched within a context of security never­ before enjoyed by the Centre. With a long-term outlook and even greater focus on transdiciplinarity, student leaders will engage the campus and broader community to develop a curriculum that will allow the CSFS to reach its full potential as a leading centre for sustainability education. The Centre's current programming at UBC's unique south campus farm - the last working farm in Vancouver­ provides agriculture, food, sustainability, and health-related learning, research, and community service programs. It has proven to be an excellent venue to meet the growing student need for experiential learning, community service learning, and connections between theory and practice. This project will further benefit student learning by developing integrated curricula using this real-world laboratory as the farm transitions into a newly-secured future.

Year 2: Summary

The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS) is entering a new era of academic activity. Leading up to the launch of a new academic plan for South Campus, this project enjoyed a successful first year buoyed by the rapidly increasing optimism for the farm’s future. This first year of activity, establishing new partnerships and piloting new curricular initiatives, laid a successful foundation and built significant momentum behind the UBC Farm’s teaching and learning programs.

Anticipating the priorities of the south campus academic plan, this project has connected students with food, sustainability, and health-related learning, research, and community service programs. To realize the potential of these connections, we propose to continue to provide a range of student support positions that integrate experiential sustainability activities into courses across disciplines. Through the efforts of this work, we anticipate directly enhancing the learning experiences of over 2,000 students annually through use of this unique living laboratory.
