Year 1: Summary

A pressing challenge among students in the Faculty of Medicine is the shortage of accessible interprofessional clinical experiences. The Department of Family Practice, in collaboration with the Department of Physical Therapy, the College of Health Disciplines and Fraser Health Authority is committed to addressing this shortage in interprofessional clinical learning sites with a new strategy. This involves expanding the existing student-run physiotherapy clinic at the Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) to introduce medical students to the interprofessional clinical setting. This innovative interprofessional collaboration aims to 1) increase interprofessional teaching and learning for students and 2) improve disease management by educating students in effective collaborative decision making and teamwork across professions. This pilot will allow assessment of both community and student outcomes while testing the feasibility of offering integrated learning experiences in the clinical teaching setting. A successful pilot will lead the way for expansion of the concept to other clinical settings.

Year 2: Summary

Interprofessional care is increasingly being recognized as an effective approach to managing complex patients. However, medical undergraduate students at UBC have limited exposure to peers and professionals from other health disciplines. Last year, the Department of Family Practice, the Department of Physical Therapy, the Director of IPE in the Faculty of Medicine, the College of Health Disciplines, and the Fraser Health Authority committed to create an interprofessional teaching clinic that would provide collaborative patient-centred health services to a population with complex needs. This pilot project, which includes medical, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy students and professionals, is scheduled to be completed in February 2011.

Building on the first phase, Phase II of the pilot project will expand to include senior medical students for a four-week primary care elective clerkship. Our objective is to establish sustainable clinical clerkships in the area of interprofessional primary care for both junior and senior medical students.
