Project Summary

The purpose of the current study is to determine the effectiveness of using cognitive task analysis (CTA) to develop curriculum materials to teach the behavioral skills and the cognitive strategies of two clinical dentistry tasks in Operative Dentistry and Endodontics. The methods involved in this study will include observing, videotaping experts thinking aloud while performing a specific task on patients, interviewing to probe deeper into the thinking processes of the experts, and designing CTA performance assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of CTA experience and materials used by volunteer DMD students. The results of this project will help evaluate whether CTA can be used to describe the cognitive process of expert dentists when performing specific tasks. If a positive evaluation of CTA is obtained, the curriculum materials subsequently developed should inform future DMD clinical curriculum development to the ultimate benefit of all future UBC dental students.
