Year 1: Summary

As part of a large and long overdue curriculum renewal initiative in Asian Studies designed to completely overhaul the suite of courses at the highest level of our large and complex CHIN program—those courses designed for ‘heritage’ and native speakers of Mandarin—our project team will survey previous teaching materials and learning patterns as well as the new challenges facing students enrolled in our highest-level CHIN literature and content courses, which between 2016 and 2018 enrolled more than 2,000 students annually on the Vancouver campus. The goal is to construct Canvas templates for all eight literature content courses in the CHIN language program for heritage students, i.e., CHIN 461/463, CHIN 471/473, CHIN 481/483 and CHIN 491/493. Our overall objective is to enhance the teaching and learning experience with open resources in the multi-sections in these courses.

Year 2: Summary

This is the second year of our project that aims to create eight Canvas templates to improve students’ academic communication skills in courses at the highest level in the Chinese Language Program designed for "heritage" and native speakers of Mandarin, i.e., CHIN 461/463, CHIN 471/473, CHIN 481/483 and CHIN 491/493. Our project will enhance students’ learning experience and learning results. To encourage students to take initiative, we develop online self-study materials. To save cost for students, we digitize course materials. To help students approach course contents with confidence, we modularize digitized materials on Canvas. To enhance students’ academic communication skills, we redesign assessments with step-by-step guidance. Our new designs in Canvas templates also provide course instructors a venue to accompany their students in the learning process. When completed, our project will transform learning into an engaging and enriching flexible experience, and move teaching toward a learning-centered paradigm.
