Project Summary

The objective of the proposed project is to develop an interactive web-based educational tool focused around a multimedia soil map (MSM) of Vancouver. This MSM tool will provide unique learning opportunities to UBC students on the topics of soil formation, urban agriculture, and ecological processes within an urban setting. The tool will be used in 14 UBC courses directly impacting learning opportunities of about 800 of UBC students each year. Current research data will be used to develop the proposed web-based map of Vancouver’s soils that will enrich active, collaborative, and reflective student learning and enhance community-based experiential learning opportunities. The MSM tool will be designed by a team of soil scientists, instructional designers, graduate students, and multimedia specialists with the intention of appealing to multiple learning styles and providing greater access to valuable information on land use opportunities within the city of Vancouver.
