Project Summary

Computational chemistry is now ubiquitous in chemistry research, yet our students are graduating with limited exposure to computational data and techniques. We aim to familiarize all undergraduate chemistry students with the computational skills to understand the literature and, in some cases, conduct computational studies themselves. The long-term outcome of this project is to have computational chemistry exposure in all four years of all chemistry programs. Computational modeling provides insights into how stability relates to molecular structure and allows for comparison among possible reaction mechanisms. Interacting with computational data has the potential to increase students’ conceptual understanding, which will lead to better long-term retention and more effective knowledge transfer. Through this approach, we will help students practice scientific habits of mind, such as asking questions, seeking data, and rationalizing experimental results. All materials, including training videos, will be openly available to educators worldwide.
